Die Basis für die 1980 vorgestellte R 80 G/S bildeten Langstrecken-Gelände-Maschinen. Neben der Fähigkeit auch schweres Gelände zu meistern, war mit dem Boxer auch die schnelle Fahrt auf der Strasse möglich. Die R 80 G/S bildete auch die Basis für die BMW-Werksmaschine, die 1981 bei der Rallye Paris-Dakar triumphierte.
